Starting Points: The Spider and the Fly

Starting Points are written to help you plan book-based units of work. In this set based on Mary Howitt’s classic narrative poem, The Spider and the Fly, and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi, you’ll find ideas to support spoken language, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling.  This Starting Points resource will give you everything you need to plan a beautiful book-based unit of work for children in KS2. 

In this set of Starting Points our suggestions for grammar learning include:

  • Revision of the four sentence types (command, statement, question, exclamation)

  • Revision of apostrophes to show where letters are missing

  • Revision of capitals used for names

  • Use of inverted commas and the range of punctuation required to write direct speech

  • Use of modal verbs

  • Use of the semi-colon, colon and dash to mark boundaries between independent clauses

  • Sentences expanded through the use of subordinating conjunctions

  • Prepositions used to indicate when and where the action takes place in sentences

  • Relative clauses

  • Noun phrases expanded to enhance descriptions, including through the use of prepositional phrases
